Texas Agriculture Commissioner Miller announces opposition to DEI and DEIA policies

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has declared his opposition to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) policies. He announced that the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) would take measures against these initiatives in a press release dated January 28, 2025.

According to the press release, Miller instructed TDA staff to cease interactions with vendors or subcontractors supporting or enforcing DEI or DEIA policies based on race, color, sex, sexual preference, religion, or national origin.

"During the last Presidential election," Miller said, "the people of Texas and the rest of the country spoke loudly and clearly and said they had enough of this DEI nonsense. President Donald Trump and the United States Department of Justice are doing their part to rid this evil from our federal institutions, and I am going to do my part in ridding it from Texas."

The Texas Department of Agriculture was established by the Texas Legislature in 1907. It aims to support production agriculture, consumer protection, economic development, and healthy living. The agency is led by an elected Agriculture Commissioner; currently Sid Miller is serving his third term since January 2023. Headquartered in Austin, TDA operates five regional service offices, two sub-offices, three laboratories, and five livestock export facilities.

Miller is the 12th person to hold the position of Texas Agriculture Commissioner. An eighth-generation farmer and rancher from De Leon, Texas, he graduated from Tarleton State University with a degree in Vocational Agricultural Education. Before becoming Agriculture Commissioner in 2014—an office he retained through re-elections in 2018 and 2022—Miller served in the Texas House of Representatives starting in 2000.
