Sid Miller's tenure as Texas Agriculture Commissioner marked by reforms and global advocacy

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, an eighth-generation farmer and rancher, continues to advocate for Texas agriculture and rural communities. Born in De Leon, Comanche County, in September 1955, Miller graduated with honors from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Ag Education.

Miller's political career began in 2000 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He quickly became known as a defender of Texas agriculture and individual liberties. In 2014, he was elected as the 12th Texas Agriculture Commissioner and re-elected in 2018 and 2022. His third term saw him receive nearly 4.5 million votes, the highest ever for a candidate for Texas Agricultural Commissioner.

Since taking office, Miller has implemented reforms at the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). Within six months, he cleared a backlog in organic certifications and improved field operations efficiency. Consumer protection inspections increased by up to 183 percent while reducing travel miles by over half a million annually.

Miller also initiated Operation Maverick to ensure businesses register their commercial scales with TDA. This led to a 35 percent increase in registrations and monitoring of over 2,000 previously unregistered businesses.

As a former ag teacher and school board member, Miller is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles among Texas schoolchildren. His initiatives have resulted in a $14 million increase in Texas products purchased by schools. He also established TDA’s Office of Water to secure clean water access for Texans.

Miller is an advocate for Texas agriculture globally through TDA’s GO TEXAN program. His efforts have included trade missions worldwide except Antarctica.

In response to the challenges faced by agricultural businesses during the pandemic, Miller declared many companies as "essential businesses," preserving jobs across the state.

Outside his official duties, Miller breeds American Quarter Horses and holds 12 world championship titles as a rodeo cowboy. He has been married to his wife Debra for over 45 years; they have two sons, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and are active members of the Cowboy Church of Erath County.
