Texas Public Policy Foundation launches video series on education spending

In Texas, the general public is largely unaware of the substantial amount of money allocated to public education, which exceeds $93 billion annually. Surprisingly, only about 40% of this funding is directed towards classroom necessities such as teacher salaries, curriculum materials, textbooks, and supplies.

To address this knowledge gap among taxpayers regarding educational expenditures, the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) has introduced a new video series titled “Suitable Provision: An Inside Look at Education Spending in Texas.”

Mandy Drogin, Campaign Manager for TPPF's Next Generation Texas campaign, stated, “The most effective way to improve the quality of education in Texas is by hiring excellent teachers, using a high-quality curriculum, and getting parents engaged in the education of their children.” She further criticized current spending priorities: “But Texas prioritizes spending on bloated administrative costs, lavish contracts for lobbyists and consultants, extravagant facilities and stadiums, and paying off a staggering amount of school district debt."

Drogin emphasized the consequences for taxpayers: “Taxpayers are getting a raw deal from school districts as costs explode while academic performance plummets. Every Texan pays into the system, though few know where all the money goes. This series will help answer those questions and better inform taxpayers about the right solutions for providing every student with the quality education they deserve.”

The inaugural episode titled “$93 Billion” aims to inform Texans about school district spending patterns and how funds are generally utilized.
