Third-grader's art becomes official road sign in Texas

On March 13, 2025, a unique initiative by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in Waco resulted in a third-grader's artwork being transformed into a road sign. The collaboration with Gatesville Independent School District involved a safety poster contest, where the winning design would be used as a road sign.

Jacob Chau, TxDOT’s director of transportation operations in Waco, said, "TxDOT cannot promote traffic safety alone. This type of initiative invites future drivers and their families into our efforts to enhance safety of the traveling public."

The contest saw numerous entries from students at Gatesville Elementary. Kamdyn Redford, a third-grade student, emerged as the winner with her message "Less phone. More road." The school was chosen for this project due to data indicating high incidents of distracted driving crashes nearby.

To commemorate the event and emphasize Kamdyn's message, TxDOT organized a ceremony at the school where her design was installed on a street sign visible to drivers approaching the pick-up line.
