Make Texans Healthy Again, a grassroots initiative, announced the launch of the Make America Healthy Again – Texas Caucus (MAHA-TX), a nonpartisan group focused on chronic disease, "health freedom," nutrition access, and transparency. The announcement was made in a press release on March 4.
The MAHA-TX Caucus's key priorities include supporting local food producers, expanding health education, addressing provider shortages, and improving healthcare and prescription affordability. The caucus also emphasizes increasing physical activity in schools and shifting toward early intervention in healthcare. Founding members include Senators Bob Hall, Bryan Hughes, Lois Kolkhorst, Mayes Middleton, and Kevin Sparks, along with multiple state representatives from both parties. Representative Carrie Isaac serves as the founding chair of MAHA-TX.
Isaac and Hughes designated March 4 as "Make Texans Healthy Again Day" to highlight rising chronic diseases, obesity, and mental health concerns. The resolution links these issues to poor nutrition, inactivity, and healthcare costs while urging Texans to support healthier lifestyles.
"The system is failing Texans," said Isaac. "We need to shift the focus from reactive, costly treatments to prevention, nutrition, and personal choice. The status quo isn’t working, and it’s time for a smarter approach."
Travis McCormick said that improving the health of Texans requires collaboration rather than blame. "Whether it’s individuals taking small steps to improve their daily habits, businesses investing in healthier communities or policymakers prioritizing prevention," he said. "The formation of the MAHA-TX Caucus is a vital step in bringing leaders together to advance common-sense solutions that empower Texans to take control of their health—so that thriving, not just surviving becomes the standard."
Make Texans Healthy Again aims to address chronic diseases and preventable health issues in Texas by educating policymakers and advocating for state policies emphasizing "personal freedom," preventative care, and holistic wellness. According to its mission statement on its website, MTHA plans to provide legislators with research and testimonies for informed decision-making while tracking healthcare-related bills.
