On May 16, Speaker of the House, Dade Phelan, released his list of interim charges for committees to study before the start of the next session.
The Texas Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA) highlighted the charges for the House Public Information Committee in a press release, including "examining the use of school voucher-like programs."
"On the school voucher front, Phelan has requested that lawmakers study the use of education savings accounts in other states, and to 'make recommendations for a Texas program,'" said TCTA.
TCTA noted that similar legislation was proposed last year and was voted down by Democrats and rural Republicans.
The Speaker also directed the House Public Education Committee to monitor the implementation of the education related bills passed last session.
He charged the committee with examining the causes and the impact on state education of hiring teachers who have not received the State Board for Educator Certification.
The committee will also make recommendations to improve early literacy and numeracy outcomes in grades Pre-K-3.
