North Texas lawmaker State Representative David Spiller (R-Jacksboro) has filed two bills aimed at prohibiting foreign land ownership in the state.
According to a November 13 Tweet attributed to Spiller, he said he was proud to have filed House Bills (HB) 191 and 243. The bills target foreign entities identified on the Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. intelligence community that pose a risk to national security from purchasing or acquiring title to real property in Texas.
Spiller said in a press release attached to his Tweet that "concerns have been raised regarding certain foreign governments owning or leasing land in the state." HB 191 focuses on four countries—China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea—with emphasis on entities rather than individuals.
HB 243 authorizes the Office of the Texas Attorney General to use the state's power of eminent domain to counter these foreign landowners. "It's complicated, but it must be done," Spiller said in the release.
