The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center in Liberty, Texas, is hosting a temporary exhibit titled "Texans Take to the Trenches: World War I and the Lone Star State." This exhibit is on loan from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and will be available for viewing through January 2025.

The exhibit consists of a series of panels featuring photographs, documents, and dispatches that highlight the experiences of Texans during World War I. Over 198,000 Texans joined the Allied Forces between 1917 and 1919 to combat the Central Powers. The display also explores how Texans at home were affected by war efforts such as rationing.

Alana Inman, Manager of the Center, stated, “We are so excited to bring this traveling exhibit to the community. The opportunity to see reproductions of materials in the State Archives and read about the experiences of both powerful leaders and everyday Texans who contributed to the war effort is valuable for all ages.”

The exhibit is located in the historic Hull-Daisetta Rosary Building on the Center’s campus at 650 FM 1011 in Liberty. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For further details, visitors can check www.tsl.texas.gov/shc or call (936) 336-8821.

The Sam Houston Center operates under the Texas State Library and Archives Commission as an official regional historical resource depository for ten Southeast Texas counties. Its mission includes collecting, preserving, and providing access to historically significant records while serving as a library for Texana and genealogical resources.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission aims to provide access to information for Texans by preserving archival records, enhancing library services across various institutions, assisting public agencies with record maintenance, and catering to reading needs for individuals with disabilities.
