The Texas Library and Archives Foundation has announced a new scholarship opportunity for students in Texas library/information science or school library certification programs. The Martha Wong Scholarship will award a reimbursable grant of $2,000 that may be used for tuition or required textbooks.

The Foundation aims to encourage Texans to pursue degrees from Texas library/information science graduate programs or school library certification programs. Funds will be allocated for the January 2025 semester. Eligible applicants must reside in Texas or work in a Texas library and intend to pursue professional library positions in Texas after obtaining their degrees.

For full grant details and to apply, interested individuals can visit the Foundation’s website at www.txlaf.org/martha-wong-scholarship. The application deadline is August 24, 2024, at midnight (central), with notifications set for October 1.

This scholarship is funded by Dr. Martha Wong, Chair of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Wong, from Houston, has served on the Commission since 2015 and was appointed chair by Governor Greg Abbott in January 2020. She is a former educator and administrator with significant contributions as a community volunteer, state representative, and Houston city council member.

Wong is also associated with the Houston Association of Retired Teachers and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Her previous roles include board membership at the Neuhaus Education Center and University of Houston Alumni Organization. Inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in 1994, she has been recognized as a Distinguished University of Houston Alumna by both the UH Alumni Association and the College of Education.

Wong holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Texas at Austin and master’s and doctorate degrees in educational administration from the University of Houston.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission provides Texans access to necessary information by preserving archival records; enhancing public, academic, and school libraries' service capacity; assisting public agencies with record maintenance; and meeting reading needs for Texans with disabilities.
