TWDB requests public input on first-ever state flood plan

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) is inviting public input regarding the creation of the state's inaugural flood plan, set to be presented to the Texas Legislature by September 1, 2024. The initiative stems from Senate Bill (SB) 8, passed by lawmakers half a decade ago.

Since 2019, proposed flood mitigation projects have been evaluated and ranked within this state flood plan.

In 2020, TWDB established 15 Regional Flood Planning Groups (RFPGs). These groups submitted revised regional flood plans to the TWDB on July 14, 2023.

Roughly two months prior, the TWDB approved these 15 revised regional flood plans, paving the way for further progress in this process.

The public comment period for the Draft 2024 State Flood Plan is currently underway. Feedback can be submitted until June 17, 2024, at 5 p.m.

According to the TWDB, those interested in providing their thoughts on the state flood plan can do so by visiting https://forms.office.com/r/c47aSBSuLa.

The Board will also host a public meeting on May 30 at 10 a.m. in room 170 of the Stephen F. Austin Building at 1700 North Congress Avenue in Austin. The meeting will be streamed live at https://meet.goto.com/549980837.

Those intending to provide comments either in person or virtually are required to complete online registration at http://www.twdb.texas.gov/board/visitor.asp and send it to StateFloodPlan@twdb.texas.gov by noon on May 29.
