The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced significant leadership changes following the retirement of Lieutenant Colonel Dwight Mathis after over 35 years of service. The vacancies created by Mathis' retirement have been filled through promotions approved by the Public Safety Commission. Jason Taylor, who has been promoted to Deputy Director of Law Enforcement Operations, will oversee various divisions within DPS. In his new role, Taylor will supervise the Criminal Investigations Division, Texas Highway Patrol, Texas Rangers, Aircraft Operations Division, and the Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division. Reflecting on his career, Taylor shared, "I am honored to take on this new role and continue serving the people of Texas."
Scotty Shiver, who has been appointed as the Chief of the Texas Ranger Division, has had a distinguished career within DPS since 1995. Shiver expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "I am humbled by this promotion and look forward to upholding the values of the Texas Rangers." Gabriel L. Ortiz, who has been promoted to Regional Director for the Capitol Region, brings 25 years of law enforcement experience to his new position. Ortiz's extensive background includes assignments in various divisions, ranging from patrol duties to overseeing organized crime investigations.
