A thorough review conducted by the Texas Military Department (TMD) has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the recent drownings of migrants in the Rio Grande. In response to claims that Border Patrol had requested access to save distressed migrants but were prevented by the TMD, the department has clarified that these claims are inaccurate.
According to TMD, at the time Border Patrol requested access to Shelby Park, the drownings had already occurred and the bodies were being recovered by Mexican Authorities. TMD soldiers were in direct communication with Border Patrol on the evening of January 12th, and it was confirmed that Border Patrol had stated that the bodies of two drowned migrants had already been recovered by Mexican Authorities.
The specific reason Border Patrol requested access to the park was to secure two additional migrants who were presumed to have traveled with the deceased but had crossed to the boat ramp. TMD apprehended two migrants, with one being turned over to DPS and the other being transferred to EMS due to initial hypothermic conditions. TMD also continued to remain vigilant by utilizing lights, night vision goggles, and thermals to ensure that no additional migrants were in the river or in distress.
In response to the investigation's findings, the TMD stated, "Claims that TMD prevented Border Patrol from saving the lives of drowning migrants are wholly inaccurate." The department has been steadfast in its mission to provide ready and trained forces in support of the citizens of Texas and state and federal civil/military authorities at home and abroad.
The TMD is commanded by the Adjutant General of Texas, the state's senior military official appointed by the governor. It is comprised of the Office of State Administration, the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, and the Texas State Guard.
