The Texas Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA) has expressed its belief that the issue of education savings accounts, despite being defeated in the 4th Special Session, will persist. The association also advocates for significant increases in public school funding in Texas.

According to The Lone Star Standard, during the 4th Special Session on Nov. 20, a vote to remove education savings accounts from the omnibus school funding legislation was passed by the Texas House with a majority of 84-63.

This amendment and subsequent motions led to the bill being sent back to the House Committee, where it remained until the end of the 4th Special Session. This delay impeded Governor Greg Abbott's priority legislation and additional increases in public school funding, as reported by The Lone Star Standard.

The same source indicated that this vote was backed by House Democrats and 21 House Republicans, most of whom represent rural districts in Texas.

Paige Williams, TCTA's Director of Legislation, expressed gratitude towards those who supported the amendment. In a statement on its website, she said "we were thankful for the people who took a very hard public vote and who were willing to stand up and speak."

In that statement, TCTA conveyed their belief that this issue is far from resolved. They stated "so far, [Governor] Abbott has not said if or when he'll call a fifth special session, but Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told the Texas Tribune he thought one should take place in February ahead of the March primaries."

TCTA concluded their statement by emphasizing that "the ongoing voucher fight and the need to increase funding for schools will make the March primaries more important than ever."
