Don Huffins: 'Our state needs parental choice'

Education

Don Huffines, a former member of the Texas Senate and current president of the Huffines Liberty Foundation, has offered his perspective on recent school bills. In his own words, "The final bill does not come at the cost of empowering enemies of our education system." He further emphasized the importance of parental choice in the state's education system.

In a consolidated statement, Huffines said, "Our state needs parental choice" and reiterated that it is "important that the final bill does not come at the cost of empowering enemies of our education system."

Houston Public Media reports that Huffines has had a long-standing political career in Texas. After serving as a Senate member, he now has ambitions to run for governor. A self-identified conservative Republican, Huffines served in this capacity in the Senate until 2018 when he was replaced. Known for supporting tax cuts, term limits in the Senate, school choices and holding creationist ideology, Huffines currently presides over the Huffines Liberty Foundation.

The foundation's primary mission, according to its own statements, is to foster prosperity in Texas. This involves enhancing citizens' knowledge so they can hold their offices accountable. The foundation pledges three things to its citizens: a commitment to delve deeper into unresolved issues, educate for liberty's sake and promote liberty throughout Texas.

As ED Choice explains, school choice has been a contentious issue for some time. School choice allows education funds to 'follow' students to whichever school or service best suits them. These funds can be used in private schools, charter schools, public schools and many other options. The funding for school choice comes from taxpayers in the respective area.
