Gov. Greg Abbott revealed his agenda to the public for the state legislature's special session in a press release issued May 29

Abbott's release covered a number of topics for the special session, including putting an end to COVID restrictions, setting funds aside for improved border security, designating Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, as well as prosecuting fentanyl deaths as murder. He also mentioned protecting women's sports, focusing community colleges on high-skill careers and increasing electric power generation for the Texas power grid.

“I will soon be signing laws that advance our state and the future of all Texans,” Abbott said in the statement.

The special session will also emphasize lowering property taxes and cracking down on illegal human smuggling. Abbott expressed the need to reduce property taxes further, and legislation will focus on reducing school district maximum compressed tax rates to provide lasting relief. Additionally, the agenda will address enhancing penalties for criminal conduct related to smuggling people or operating stash houses, aiming to strengthen border security.

In the statement, Abbott acknowledged the need for multiple special sessions to deal with the remaining priorities in a thorough way. He emphasized that only a few items will be added to each session to ensure sufficient time and attention.
