The international saga involving Trevor Reed, a North Texas man and former Marine who was imprisoned in Russia, ended with the U.S. successfully securing his release late last month.
Reed was freed after nearly three years of imprisonment abroad, according to the Associated Press (AP), San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT reported.
U.S. Rep. August Pfluger (R-San Angelo), who was part of an effort to urge the Russian government to release the Hood County native, expressed his enthusiasm on Twitter.
"This is the moment we have all been praying for," Pfluger said in a tweet.
Odessa CBS affiliate KOSA reported that Reed, who resides in Pfluger's congressional district, was arrested in 2019 for allegedly attacking a police officer during an arrest after a night of binge drinking.
According to the station, Reed's family has asserted his innocence.
In exchange for Reed, per KOSA, the Americans freed Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot who was in the midst of a 20-year prison sentence at a federal correctional facility on the East Coast for conspiracy to smuggle cocaine.
Pfluger said in a statement that the Russians held Reed for "an anguishing 985 days," the station reported.
“I would like to thank my colleagues in Congress for working in a bipartisan manner to pass our resolution calling for Trevor’s release, and for continuing to draw attention to his case—including Congressman (Michael) McCaul, Sen. (John) Cornyn, Leader (Kevin) McCarthy, Congresswoman (Sheila) Jackson Lee, Congressman (Joaquin) Castro and so many more," Pfluger said in the statement.
KSAT reported that Reed landed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland after midnight last Thursday (April 28).
Pfluger's official Twitter account showed pictures of him welcoming the ex-Marine.
Reed's parents were also at the military installation to receive their son, according to the station.
The release came just as the war between Russia and Ukraine entered its second month.
