The company made famous in the Back to the Future film series may be poised for an “electrified” comeback and has tapped San Antonio as the base for its operations.

According to News 4, the carmaker is pinning its future on the production of a new electric vehicle, with operations taking place in San Antonio. Joost de Vries, CEO of DeLorean Motor Company, told the station the company is grateful for the support it has received from the area.

“San Antonio boasts a growing component and vehicle manufacturing sector as well as a wide array of global advanced manufacturing operations,” de Vries told News 4. “This allows us countless synergies between established companies and suppliers in the broader region.”

A commercial that aired during the Super Bowl pregame show teased at the return of the DeLorean nameplate, a brand made famous by Doc Brown’s time machine that transports Marty McFly back in time in the Back to the Future films, which didn't release until 1985, two years after the original company had closed its doors. The news outlet noted that the company will join some established brands in the growing automotive industry in San Antonio, including Toyota, Tesla and Navistar.

“A deep talent pool and a strong local academic ecosystem will foster further innovation,” de Vries told News 4.

According to KSAT, the headquarters will employ 450 people, including executive, management and engineering positions. Citing a news release, the station also noted that final approvals are needed for incentive packages.

“By planning to establish their global headquarters in San Antonio, DeLorean is validating the talent, strategic preparation, and adaptability our region provides for EV manufacturers to thrive,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in the news release cited by KSAT.

San Antonio is part of a hub of automotive manufacturing that extends from Austin to Monterrey, Mexico, according to News 4, which also noted that DeLorean still is evaluating locations for its manufacturing operation.

Moreover, KSAT reported that DeLorean plans on focusing on national and international growth in addition to the jobs it will create locally.

Port San Antonio is a key part of the region’s efforts to attract businesses like DeLorean, and Port San Antonio CEO Jim Perschbach said that the port is pleased to welcome the company to the fold.
