Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Don Huffines recently signed the American Principles Project's Big Family Pledge.
The American Principles Project's Big Family Pledge calls on legislators to actively support legislation in five key areas: "Defend girls’ sports by prohibiting biological males from participating, including at the collegiate level;" "Protect children from experimental 'gender transition' procedures, including irreversible surgeries, chemical castration, and psychiatric neglect;" "Let kids be kids and protect them from dangerous and divisive propaganda being taught in schools, such as critical race theory and gender ideology;" "Safeguard children from exposure to pornography, obscenity, and indecency;" and "Protect life from conception to natural death."
Texas Scorecard reported that although Gov. Abbott has not signed the pledge, three of his challengers have, including Don Huffines.
“It’s time for Texas to finally have a governor who takes the well-being of Texas kids and families seriously," Huffines said.
Huffines has previously criticized Abbott for failing to take further action to outlaw sex reassignment procedures for minors.
Texas Home School Coalition recently endorsed Huffines in this race, according to Austin Journal. They had endorsed Abbott in the 2014 and 2018 elections.
"...We have been disappointed in Gov. Abbott, because he has had numerous occasions to support parents in our litigation, our legislation, to protect the fundamental right of families and parents to raise their kids - and he's declined to do so," Texas Home School Coalition President Tim Lambert said. "And now as - in our opinion - a political posturing, he's come out and saying he wants a 'parent bill of rights.' And as I've said before, we're skeptical."
"If he's serious, we'll work with him. But today, we are endorsing, in the Republican primary for the governor of Texas, someone we believe IS a champion for parents' rights in Texas: Donald Huffines, former state senator from the Dallas area [...] He is a home school dad, he's served in the Texas Senate, and he was a staunch supporter of home schooling and parental rights. He stood with us, defending families against CPS."
Huffines is joined by two other gubernatorial challengers to Gov. Greg Abbott who have also signed the pledge.
Elected in 2014, Gov. Greg Abbott is currently serving as the 48th Governor of Texas. Before being elected governor, Abbott was the longest-serving Attorney General of Texas.
Huffines will face Abbott in the gubernatorial primary on March 1. From 2015 to 2019, he represented Texas' 16th State Senate District. Huffines is the CEO of Huffines Communities, a Dallas/Fort Worth-based real estate development firm.
