Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said that he will oppose the Equality Act in the courts if it comes to pass in Congress.
Roy claims that the bill, though it’s designed to provide LGBTQ individuals the same freedoms that others enjoy, will trample on the rights of people like him. Critics of the bill said that the Equality Act will discriminate against people of faith, religious institutions, women and other individuals who adhere to a more traditional concept of gender identification.
Roy echoed the sentiments of those critics and warned Americans that the Democratic Party is overreaching with its ideals and it will only be a matter of time before it starts forcing its values onto conservative Americans. He said, “This is a government using its power to tell us to bow down to the will of a cultural elite in this town who want to tell us what we’re supposed to believe. We’re not going to do that.”
President Joe Biden made it his priority to enact the Equality Act within his first 100 days as president. He said that enacting the bill will ensure that “America lives up to our foundational values of equality and freedom for all.”
