In response to the COVID-19 pandemic impact, Gov. Greg Abbott has authorized approximately $202 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for November.
The governor reported in a press release the funding will be provided through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The influx of funds will serve over 1 million SNAP households, which will see an additional amount on Lone Star Cards.
The emergency allotment is in addition to approximately $1.5 billion in benefits awarded from April to October. Due to the pandemic, the commission received approval to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to state recipients based on the size of the family. Federal approval was granted through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"We will continue to ensure Texans can provide nutritious food for their families throughout the COVID-19 response," Abbott said. "I thank our partners at the USDA for extending these emergency benefits for the month of November."
