The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is giving close to $188 million in SNAP food benefits for September 2020.
The effort is a continuing response to the COVID-19 crisis.
"Texas will continue to ensure access to nutritious meals as we mitigate the spread of COVID-19," Governor Greg Abbott said in a press release. "This emergency SNAP extension will help Texans provide healthy food for their families."
The governor's office states that over 972,000 SNAP families will see the additional benefits on Sept. 15. The emergency September distributions are added to the already $1 billion in benefits provided to Texans who receive government assistance.
"As families return to school, this extension helps Texans purchase healthy, nutritious foods for their households," Wayne Salter, Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive commissioner, said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved for HHSC to receive federal approval to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits for each resident based on the number of recipients who reside in the household.
