The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has received authorization from the federal government to extend certifications for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries by six months.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the health commission federal approval to also waive interview requirements for new recipients.

Wayne Salter, the Texas Health and Human Services Access and Eligibility Services deputy executive commissioner, says the effort gives residents in need the opportunity to seek assistance while remaining safe at home.

“As we continue to fight against COVID-19, these automatic renewals provide food security and peace of mind to families in need during this unprecedented time,” Salter said. “Waiving interviews also reinforces that it is important to stay home when possible to minimize potential exposure to COVID-19.”

The interview waiver is for new applicants and those whose benefits being renewed. The new authority also allows the Health and Human Services Commission to process applications as they are received rather than go through the waiting process.
