The early voting period for the July 14 primary runoff elections in Texas is now twice as long as because of uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to The Texas Tribune, Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that early voting will kick off on June 29, rather than July 6. He said in a statement that keeping the initial election dates “would prevent, hinder, or delay necessary action in coping with the COVID-19 disaster."
The decision comes after Abbott initiated use of his emergency powers in handling the widespread coronavirus.
Meanwhile, local election authorities are still trying to determine how to move forward with the runoff elections while making sure that polling locations are safe for everyone. They’ve already taken steps by purchasing sanitizing products and protective gear. They are also said to be considering the idea of using plastic shields.
