A safe house for trafficking victims is expected to open soon in Brazoria County. 

According to The Facts, Refuge for Women is planning to open a new aftercare home soon in Brazoria County, though the outbreak of COVID-19 has stalled their initial open date by several months. 

Refuge for Women is a Christian-based organization, but they do not discriminate in who they offer services to. 

The nation’s biggest aftercare provider for victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation, they are proud to provide individuals with the support that they need to be rehabilitated after experiencing significant trauma. 

Refuge for Women Texas Gulf Coast Development Director Vicki Kirby explained the important role that the organization has played in the lives of countless women over the years. 

“Every woman who comes to us is in a crisis, but the crises are always different,” Kirby said.

Similarly, Refuge for Women Texas Gulf Coast Board Chairman Curtis Swisher said that even though the damages experienced by women are complex, the organization does what they can to bring solace to those in need. 

“One of the things I’ve learned is that the problem of sex trafficking is so huge, complex or dark, that no single person and all organization can fight it on all fronts,” Swisher said. “We’re just here to help out, the best that we can. We’ll be there to help, from complete care, to guided independence.”

Refuge for Women purchased a house for the Brazoria County location and are planning to officially open the doors to women once the coronavirus pandemic is better managed. 

While the physical home is not currently available to those in need, services by Unbound Houston are available, such as gift cards for individuals who are in vulnerable conditions to be able to purchase items that they need. 

Refuge for Women still needs to raise $150,000 in capital as well as to hire staff for their Brazoria County branch.
