Working near the roadside can be unsettling, especially when an unexpected encounter with a large reptile occurs. In Weslaco, Texas, a six-foot alligator recently made its way into a storm drain at the intersection of FM 1015 and Camino de Verdad, capturing local attention.
David Cano, a construction inspector with TxDOT, was surprised by the presence of the alligator. "I was really surprised to see an alligator like that," he said. "Reptile eyes with slits. The sun was peering through, and you could barely see. It was exciting!"
Cano discovered the alligator after visiting a nearby work site and promptly contacted local animal control and the game warden for assistance. The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary eventually intervened to remove the alligator from the storm drain.
The alligator, named Stormy in recognition of her location, was safely transported to the sanctuary following her rescue.
