Commissioner Sid Miller has expressed his support for a legislative initiative to establish an official steak cut for Texas. In a statement, Miller highlighted the state's leading role in beef production and its economic impact. "Texas leads the nation in beef production, generating billions for our economy and putting the best steaks on dinner plates across America. It’s about time we had a signature Texas cut to match," he said.
Miller endorsed Senate Concurrent Resolution 26 (SCR 26) and House Concurrent Resolution 101 (HCR 101), commending the Texas Legislature's efforts. He emphasized that an official Texas cut would not only highlight the state's beef but also reinforce its status as a leader in cattle production globally. "A proper Texas cut wouldn’t just showcase our beef but cement our place as the global leader in top-quality cattle production," Miller said.
The Commissioner suggested options such as renaming the New York Strip to "Texas Strip" or designating the Tomahawk Ribeye as the premier cut. He stressed that this distinction should be reserved for beef raised in Texas by local ranchers. Addressing challenges faced by ranchers, including droughts and trade disruptions, Miller remarked, "This is more than branding a steak; it’s about standing with the men and women who keep Texas fed, fueled, and thriving."
Miller assured that the Texas Department of Agriculture is prepared to market and promote the chosen cut both locally and internationally.
