The Texas shrimp industry is facing significant challenges, according to a statement from Commissioner Sid Miller. He expressed support for Representative A.J. Louderback's proposal aimed at addressing the crisis impacting Gulf shrimpers. The proposal, known as HCR 76, calls on the federal government to limit foreign shrimp imports and protect local shrimpers from what is described as unfair competition.

Miller highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, "The Texas and U.S. shrimp industry in the Gulf of America is facing a catastrophic crisis that threatens its survival." He noted that the influx of farm-raised and imported shrimp has been detrimental to local businesses.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of consumer choice in supporting local industries: "Buy only Gulf of America shrimp and ask local restaurants to serve only Gulf shrimp." This appeal comes amid concerns over job losses and economic impacts if the current trend continues.

According to Miller, over 90 percent of shrimp consumed in the U.S. is imported. He urged consumers to prioritize purchasing locally sourced products, describing Gulf shrimp as fresher and more sustainably harvested compared to alternatives.

Maddison Jaureguito, Director of Communications, released this statement in an effort to raise awareness about the industry's plight and rally support for measures proposed by Rep. Louderback.
