Commissioner Sid Miller has expressed support for President Trump's recent decision to delay tariffs on agricultural commodities from Mexico and Canada. The tariffs are part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). According to Miller, this move allows more time for negotiations with both countries and provides temporary relief for agricultural producers.
"I applaud President Trump’s decision to delay tariffs on Mexican and Canadian agricultural commodities and products included in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This decision will provide more time for open negotiation with both countries and, most importantly, provide short-term relief and time for our agricultural producers," said Miller.
He also praised Trump's tariff strategy, which he believes will enhance domestic production, attract investments, spur job growth, and reduce consumer costs. However, he acknowledged that there would be a challenging adjustment period for farmers already facing difficulties.
"It has only been seven weeks, and while I understand that many farmers and ranchers need immediate relief, we must give President Trump and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins the necessary time to address the economic challenges left by the Biden Administration," added Miller.
Miller emphasized past successes under Trump's previous administration when tariffs were credited with strengthening American agriculture. He remains confident in securing better trade deals in the future.
"No president in modern history has been as steadfast in fulfilling campaign promises as President Trump across his two terms, and I have no doubt he will once again deliver for American farmers and businesses," stated Miller.
