An individual from Guatemala has been arrested in Los Angeles, accused of leading a major human smuggling organization. This group is alleged to have smuggled around 20,000 illegal immigrants from Guatemala into the United States over five years. The suspect, Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul, also known as Turko, was apprehended on February 28 along with Cristobal Mejia-Chaj. Both are charged with multiple offenses including conspiracy and hostage-taking.

"These arrests illuminate the dangers and victimization associated with aliens attempting to unlawfully enter our country," stated ICE Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles acting Special Agent in Charge John Pasciucco. He emphasized the commitment to dismantling such organizations to prevent further loss of life.

Renoj-Matul's operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including a child, during a car accident in Oklahoma in November 2023. The indictment charges him and his associates with crimes related to smuggling and harboring illegal immigrants for financial gain.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally commented on the situation: "These smuggling organizations have no regard for human life and their conduct kills." He noted that dismantling these groups is crucial for public safety.

The investigation involves U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Border Patrol, and local law enforcement agencies. If convicted, those involved could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or death.

Additional arrests were made on February 28 involving other members of Renoj-Matul's organization. Authorities continue to seek information related to human smuggling activities through an ICE Tip Line.
