The Texas Department of State Health Services has made updates to its respiratory illness dashboard. The updated features include enhanced hospitalization reporting and additional visual elements. Initially launched in January, the dashboard also provides data on emergency department visits and deaths related to influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. It is accessible through the DSHS website.
The dashboard serves as a resource for Texans and healthcare professionals to make informed health decisions. In addition to the dashboard, DSHS offers a weekly report featuring laboratory results, outpatient influenza-like illness surveillance, and regional and county-level data.
“These great tools help us show you what is happening regarding respiratory illnesses in your community with data and easy-to-follow visuals,” said DSHS Chief State Epidemiologist Varun Shetty, MD, MBA, MS. “Our goal is to empower you with the information you need to stay safe this season.”
The respiratory virus season typically spans from October to May. DSHS advises Texans to get vaccinated against severe illnesses that can lead to hospitalization or death.
With year-end holidays approaching, practices such as frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick are recommended to curb the spread of respiratory illnesses.
Currently, Texas reports an increase in positive RSV tests along with more emergency department visits and hospitalizations among young children aged 0-4. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends RSV immunization for infants, certain young children, and older adults.
Additionally, there is a rise in emergency department visits due to influenza-like illnesses and positive flu tests in Texas. Last week saw an increase in ILI activity categorized as 'moderate,' while neighboring states like Louisiana reported 'high' levels. Flu vaccination remains the best defense against flu-related illness and hospitalization.
Historically, COVID-19 activity tends to increase after Thanksgiving. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are currently available.
