Texans are showing a strong preference for staying within their state, according to the latest report from Texas REALTORS. In 2023, over 11% of Texas residents, equating to approximately 3,356,000 people, relocated within the state. This figure represents both the highest percentage and number of internal movers among U.S. states. The data was sourced from the U.S. Census and analyzed in the "Fall 2024 Texas Relocation Report."
"Texas is a great place to live," said Jef Conn, Chairman of Texas REALTORS. "With our wide variety of locations, quality of life, and thriving economy, it’s not surprising that so many Texans who moved chose to remain in the Lone Star State."
Despite a slight decline in overall U.S. relocations in 2023, Texas maintained its appeal as a destination for interstate movers. Moves to Texas accounted for 8.1% of all state-to-state relocations for the second consecutive year. Only Florida surpassed this with an 8.4% share.
California was identified as both the top origin and destination state for Texans moving across state lines. However, more individuals moved from California to Texas than vice versa, resulting in a net gain of over 55,000 new residents for Texas in 2023—the largest net gain from any state. Florida followed with a net increase of about 13,000 people moving to Texas.
Overall, Texas experienced a net increase of more than 133,000 residents due to interstate moves last year.
"Making Texas your home is a great choice for many people," Conn added. "And choosing a Texas REALTOR to help with the process is the smartest move you can make."
The report is based on migration estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
