The Texas AFL-CIO has announced a change in its communications leadership. Tara Pohlmeyer will take over as the new Communications Director, succeeding Ed Sills, who is retiring after 31 years in the role. Pohlmeyer, currently serving as Communications Director for U.S. Representative Greg Casar, will begin her new position on January 7.

Sills' last day will be December 20. Reflecting on his tenure, Sills expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share stories of the labor movement in Texas. "I’m forever grateful to generations of amazing union officers and staff and to the working men and women of the Texas AFL-CIO who stand strongly — and all too often against the current — for dignity on the job," he said.

Pohlmeyer looks forward to continuing this work. "The path toward a better Texas — a Texas that works for working people — runs through the Texas labor movement," she said. She emphasized her commitment to building on Sills's legacy and advancing the labor movement.

Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy praised Sills for his contributions and welcomed Pohlmeyer to her new role. "We are beyond excited to have Tara join our team and bring her unique skills directly into the service of the labor movement," Levy said.

Pohlmeyer has been with Congressman Casar's team since 2020, handling communications during significant events such as winter storms and election cycles. She is a graduate of Texas State University and hails from the Rio Grande Valley.

Sills began his career at Texas AFL-CIO in 1994 after working as a reporter and bureau chief. He was involved in various initiatives including legislative advocacy and managing communication programs.

The Texas AFL-CIO represents 240,000 union members advocating for workers across the state.
