Dan Patrick, the Lieutenant Governor of Texas, has declared school choice as his primary policy focus. Patrick shared this priority in a post on November 8 on the social media platform X.
"My Statement: School Choice Is My Top Policy Priority," said Patrick.
According to a release on November 6, Governor Greg Abbott highlighted the increasing support for school choice within Texas and detailed forthcoming actions to ensure that every parent in Texas can select the best educational institution for their children. "School choice is wanted by all demographic groups in the state of Texas. Hispanics and African Americans in the state of Texas, they strongly support school choice. Those parents want an option. They know their child better than any government employee does, and they want to put their child on the pathway toward success. School choice improves educational opportunities for minority and low-income students. Texas is going to make sure they have that opportunity," Abbott said.
Patrick emphasized the need for parental empowerment in choosing educational environments, saying, "Many Texas schools are striving to be great, and are great, and most are good. Unfortunately, no matter their effort, some schools struggle to meet the unique educational needs that some students require. Parents should be empowered to place their child in the best learning environment, whether that is a public or private school."
Patrick was first elected as Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 2014 and subsequently re-elected in 2018 and 2022, according to information from his office. Prior to this role, he served two terms in the Texas Senate beginning in 2006 and again in 2010 representing part of Harris County. His career spans over four decades in media as a television anchor, conservative talk show host, and radio station owner. Patrick has also been active in community service, raising over $20 million for children with disabilities and receiving several awards for his leadership.
