The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has published the final financial accountability ratings for public school systems in Texas for the 2023-2024 academic year.
According to a November 8 press release from the state agency, 83% of the state's independent school districts (ISDs) received an "A" or Superior Achievement rating for the previous school year. These districts demonstrated "a continued commitment to effective financial management practices so that they can best serve students," as said in the release.
The School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) was established over two decades ago by Texas lawmakers. The TEA release indicates that these ratings are derived from annual financial reports submitted by school systems for the 2023 fiscal year. The ratings include four letter grades—A, B, C, and F—alongside corresponding financial management ratings: Superior Achievement, Above Standard Achievement, Meets Standard Achievement, or Substandard Achievement.
In total, 876 districts and 114 charter schools were recognized as Superior Achievement entities, with a total of 1,193 ratings issued.
