The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) has released an update to its comprehensive analysis of federal energy subsidies.
An October 24 press release from the TPPF states that subsidies for wind and solar generation continue to grow with no end in sight. "There are over $140 billion since 2010, with nearly half the total being amassed in the last four years," the release says.
According to the analysis authored by Dr. Brent Bennett, Life:Powered policy director, subsidies for wind and solar exceed those for oil and gas, nuclear, and coal when considering electricity production from these resources. Wind has received 48 times more subsidies per unit of electricity generated than oil and gas, while solar has been described as receiving a staggering 168 times more.
The report indicates that the development of advanced nuclear and fossil fuel technologies has been overlooked in favor of immediate installations. Bennett says in the release that energy markets should be driven by competition rather than government mandates and subsidies.
