Bryan Sunderland, director of advocacy at the Cicero Institute, said that granting two-year temporary licenses to internationally licensed doctors with five years of experience can accelerate the influx of doctors in the U.S. healthcare system. Sunderland was a guest on a recent episode of the Texas Talks Podcast.

"If you can find an internationally licensed doctor with five years of practice experience and a hospital here in the United States that wants to invite them to practice, give them a two-year temporary license," said Sunderland on a recent edition of the Texas Talks Podcast. “Let them be overseen by the doctors around them to ensure things are going well. If they successfully practice for two years, they already have five-plus years of experience practicing elsewhere; give them a license.”

“Let’s see if we can accelerate the influx of doctors into the system because it’s going to take a lot longer to build the pipeline of new physicians being trained in the United States," said Sunderland. “Those are some of the reforms we've had passed in Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Idaho, and it’s pending in 4 or 5 other states right now."

Sunderland serves as the Director of Advocacy for the Cicero Institute. The Cicero Institute is a nonpartisan public policy organization specializing in government, legislation, law, technology, and entrepreneurship.
