The upcoming Family History Day workshop at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center aims to assist individuals in preserving their family's historical treasures. According to Tonia Wood, the TSLAC Information Services Supervisor, the event will provide attendees with the opportunity to discover and preserve their family's history.
Wood will be leading sessions on finding ancestors' stories within the SHC and TSLAC collections, as well as providing guidance on the basic preservation of paper-based materials. In preparation for the workshop, participants are encouraged to bring their own family heirlooms for expert advice on their care. Wood emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "Don’t miss this free informative workshop!"
The workshop, scheduled for Saturday, March 30, will feature a range of activities throughout the day. The agenda includes an Introduction to TSLAC Genealogy Resources and a Deep Dive into Early Texas Records for Genealogists, both led by Tonia Wood. Following a lunch break, Jelain Chubb, the State Archivist, will conduct a session on Preserving Your Family Treasures from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center, a component of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, serves as the official regional historical resource depository for ten Southeast Texas counties. The center's primary mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to historically significant state and local government records and publications, as well as to serve as a library of Texana and genealogical resources.
