Due to the rapidly increasing population of the Houston area, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) has approved a new phone area code to be used when the current ones run out. The PUCT is responsible for the management of all electric, water, wastewater, and telecommunication throughout Texas. They enforce laws to ensure compliance and smooth operation of these systems.
According to an article by CultureMap Houston, the population of the Houston area is projected to exceed 8 million by 2028. By the year 2100, Houston is estimated to be the second-largest metropolitan area in the United States. This growth is in line with similar trends seen in other areas along the Sun Belt, such as Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
The PUCT announcement shares that they project the current four area codes will expire in the year 2025 and at this time the new code, 621, will be implemented. This new 621 area code is expected to last around nine years. Governor Greg Abbott shred in the announcement that: "This new phone area code is a testament to the economic strength and quality of life in the greater Houston area." As population continues to grow, a new area code is only one of many new accommodations that will need to be made.
As the population continues to grow, the addition of a new area code is just one of many accommodations that will need to be made. The PUCT's approval of the new area code ensures that there will be enough phone numbers available to meet the needs of the expanding population in the Houston area.
