Secretary of State Jane Nelson: 'I am proud to point to Texas as a leader in cancer research and prevention'

Secretary of State, Jane Nelson, was recognized for her contributions to furthering cancer research in Texas during this year's Texas Conquer Cancer Awards ceremony, giving credit specifically to her work with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.

"Honored to be a part of the Texans Conquer Cancer Awards last night," said Nelson. "In my work as Secretary of State, I am proud to point to Texas as a leader in cancer research and prevention, including CPRIT."

Secretary of State Jane Nelson is a businesswoman and former teacher who has a long history in politics. She was the first woman to chair a standing budget-writing committee in Texas and was a member of the Senate State Affairs Committee. She was appointed as Texas Secretary of State in January of 2023, making her the 115th Secretary of Texas. She has worked heavily with the medical industry, most notably establishing the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas and has been recognized many times for her work in other organizations including the American Cancer Association and the American Medical Association.

The Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas (CPRIT) was first approved in 2007 along with a positive vote to invest $3 billion in the research to beat cancer. Being well supported by the citizens of Texans, CPRIT has now become part of a 20 year initiative with a funding of $6 billion. The mission of CPRIT is to invest in the research of Texas universities to increase understanding of cancer. They also strive for new techniques to get a better understanding of the disease faster and to generate and grow life science infrastructure throughout Texas.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Conquer Cancer, an organization that has reaches all across the world. They have become a network for doctors, researchers, patients, caregivers, and all advocates to learn from one another and help to increase the understanding of cancer. The mission of Conquer Cancer is to further advance research in Texas to come up with a cure and better prevention tactics. Their vision is a world in which cancer can be prevented or cured for every person who has to endure it and to come out healthy and able to live an ordinary life.
