The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted over a thousand "underage compliance operations" to test if retailers would sell to minors. Through their inspections, they found a 93% success rate of these merchants.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced that 93% of retailers in Texas successfully didn't sell alcohol to minors as tested through their "underage compliance operation."
In a study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 2021, about 11.1 million people between the ages 12 to 20 reported that they drank alcohol in the last year. In this same study, 3.2 million people in this age group reported that they binge-drank in the month prior to them taking the study. The effect of underage drinking is taking a negative toll as seen by the thousands of deaths that occur every year. In 2021, there were 1,573 car crashes reported due to underage drinking, 190 deaths from overdrinking, falling, burning, or drowning due to alcohol-impaired senses, and 718 deaths from suicides done while intoxicated.
In an effort to decrease and all together get rid of these numbers, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission works to properly enforce all alcohol-related laws and monitor the selling of alcohol throughout the state. In every stage of distribution including through manufacturing, importing, transporting, advertising, selling, et cetera, the Commission works to protect minors from the negative effects it can take on them. They also work to protect all citizens of Texans and do their part in boosting the overall well-being and safety of Texans, even those who are able to drink.
In working to prevent underage drinking, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducts Underage Compliance Operations. During these tests they work with minors who are eighteen years or younger and have volunteered to help. Their job is enter establishments that sell alcohol and try to purchase some. The Commission's goal in these tests is to see if the retailer will card the individual, as is their lawful duty, or sell the alcohol to them freely. Through these tests they hope to encourage and set examples for retailers to be diligent in their sales and to do their part in preventing underage drinking and casualties that may ensue.
