During a Parent Empowerment Night held at Brazos Christian School in Bryan, Gov. Greg Abbott highlighted the importance of a parent's right to choose the best education for their children.
State Rep. John Raney (R-Bryan), Texas Public Policy Foundation Campaign Director Mandy Drogin, Brazos Christian School Headmaster Jefferey McMaster and other parent empowerment advocates joined Abbott at the event, which was hosted by the Parent Empowerment Coalition.
The event drew over 200 participants. The crowd consisted of parents, educators and students, as well as local leaders in education, with school and community stakeholders. Those in attendance were able to share their knowledge and experience with each other. This allowed attendees to explore real solutions to current issues faced by parents and educators. Discussions were held regarding education reform and the growing need for parental empowerment in their children's education.
Abbott announced education freedom for all Texans as an emergency item for the 88th Legislative Session during his recent 2023 State of the State address. According to Abbott, parents know what is better for their children's success more than anyone else, and when it comes to education, parents matter.
Abbott has long advocated for curriculum reform in all Texas public schools and is in favor of more parental empowerment to help determine the successes of school children. He has also urged for the expansion of state-funded Education Savings Accounts in order to provide every parent with the freedom to choose the best school and education opportunities for their student’s individual needs.
The Parental Bill of Rights was also a topic of discussion. The rights would give parents access to curriculum, school libraries and what their children are being taught.
“Our country is premised on freedom, and that freedom as it concerns raising children rests the most in parents," Abbott said.
