Just before Independence Day weekend, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced that sales tax revenue for the month of June totaled $3.68 billion, which is 16.4% more than June of 2021, according to a press release.

“State sales tax collections surged in June, outpacing inflation, with strong growth in receipts from all major economic sectors,” Hegar said, according to the press release.

In 2021, the Tax Foundation found that Texas had the sixth-highest property tax rate measured as property taxes paid as a percentage of owner-occupied housing value in 2019.

Specifically, Austin ISD's property tax grew 33.4% from $1.2 billion in 2016 to $1.6 billion in 2020, according to a report published by the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The combined population and inflation for the city grew by 4.6% during that time, resulting in a 28.9% difference.

On May 11, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that he fully supports using the state budget surplus to reduce property taxes owed by Texans over the long term, according to Click 2 Houston.

“I can tell you for a fact, property tax rates across Texas are going to go down,” Abbott said, according to Click 2 Houston.

Non-Partisan Texas Public Policy Foundation has proposed using some of the multi-billion-dollar surplus to pay down the largest fees facing homeowners, those being maintenance and operations tax. James Quintero of the Texas Public Policy Foundation noted that if this plan were to be implemented, “We can actually compress that tax rate all the way down to zero and that will provide people with lots of tax relief," Click 2 Houston reported.
