Don Huffines has stated that the Heartbeat Bill is evidence that discouraging abortions is working, but he believes that no exception should be made for any pregnancy termination whatsoever.
The “Heartbeat Act” became law on Sept. 1, 2020, which bars abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually after six weeks of pregnancy, excluding cases of medical emergency, rape or incest. While it doesn’t provide criminal implications for those in violation of the law, it allows for private civil lawsuits against law violators, according to Capital.
“The Heartbeat Bill is proof that conservative government works. For too long, RINOs like Greg Abbott have kept our conservative priorities on the backburner,” Huffines told the Lone Star Standard. “This bill has saved thousands of lives, and it’s a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough. As Governor, I will not rest until abortion is totally banned in the State of Texas, no exceptions. And I’m never asking permission from the federal government.”
The New York Times reported last October that abortions in the state were less than half of the number of abortions during the same month in 2020.
Texas Health and Human Services reported that there have been 370,521 abortions in the state since Gov. Abbott took office in 2015.
Gov. Abbott has been in office since 2014 and served as the longest-serving attorney general of Texas prior to becoming the 48th governor of the state, according to his website.
Huffines is the CEO of Huffines Communities, a Dallas/Fort Worth-based real estate development firm. He will face Abbott in the gubernatorial primary on March 1 and previously represented Texas' 16th State Senate District.
