Wildcats match up with Vaqueros on Wednesday night

Abilene Christian University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 25

The Wildcats have another long road trip ahead of them as they head south for a matchup with UTRGV on Wednesday night. This will be another new opponent as ACU moves their way through WAC play. The team is coming off a huge win over California Baptist that broke a five-game skid and put the Wildcats back in the win column for the first time in three weeks. This road trip could provide a chance for ACU to start another win streak as the Vaqueros have just one WAC win on the season so far.

ACU Storylines (12-7, 3-5 WAC)

  • Airion Simmons was back in the lineup for ACU last week and provided the energy boost expected with his return. In the win over CBU, Simmons went for a game-high 18 points while adding three rebounds and three steals.
  • The Wildcats defense was back to what they were earlier in the season, holding both of last week's opponents under 45 percent shooting from the field and less than 30 percent from three for the first time since the opening week of WAC play.
  • Reggie Miller had an efficient shooting weekend from behind the arc last week going 5-7 from deep. He also dished out seven assists over the two games.
  • Despite the long travel coming up the team is playing on Wednesday night instead of Thursday to help ease the turnaround. The team will travel seven and a half hours to Edinburg before making the six and a half hour trip to Beaumont.
Scouting the Vaqueros (6-13, 1-6 WAC)

  • UTRGV has five different players averaging 8.5 points per game or more with Justin Johnson leading the team at 16.4 points per game. Johnson is the only player averaging double figures for the Vaqueros.
  • The team is last in the WAC in scoring defense, giving up 78 points per game.
  • As a team, the Vaqueros are shooting 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from three.
  • Rickey Nelson is shooting lights out from three on the season, knocking down 48 percent of his shots from deep.
