Governor Greg Abbott has announced that his Public Safety Office will distribute over $500 million in grant funding for various public safety programs across Texas. The funding, sourced from both federal and state contributions, will support initiatives such as victim services, anti-human trafficking efforts, border security, and law enforcement assistance.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of these grants: “Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is our top priority in Texas. These public safety grants will provide critical funding to strengthen Texas agencies and organizations as they work to secure the border, prevent human trafficking, ensure justice for victims, and protect Texans from dangerous criminals and violence. With this $500 million in grant funding, we will continue to build a safer Texas for all."
The grants cover a wide range of projects including body-worn cameras for peace officers with 98 awards totaling $4.6 million, bullet-resistant shields with 100 awards totaling $4.9 million, and homeland security measures with 316 awards totaling $56.5 million. Additionally, significant funds are allocated towards human trafficking prevention with 46 awards amounting to $24.8 million.
Other notable allocations include internet crimes against children taskforces receiving three awards worth $900,000 and juvenile justice programs with 111 awards totaling $8 million aimed at preventing school violence and improving the juvenile justice system.
The Governor’s Public Safety Office coordinates these grants with regional partner agencies across Texas. Interested entities can apply for future funding by contacting their local Councils of Governments (COG) to understand specific timelines and requirements.
