Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) wants businesses to re-open despite the Department of State Health Services' latest recommendation for restrictions.
He said there is no constitutional basis for the lockdown mandates which have been killing jobs, and has called for ending the restrictions.
"Lockdowns are not supported by law, they are unconstitutional edicts," Crenshaw tweeted. "Law enforcement should not enforce this. Stop stealing people’s right to make a living."
Since the pandemic began, more than 10,000 restaurants in Texas have shut down.
DSHS has recommended Houston bars to close, and restaurants and other businesses to reduce accommodation of customers at the establishments back at 50 percent. The recommendation came after health officials saw an increase in the bed occupancy rate of COVID-19 patients that had been at 15 percent for seven consecutive days.
The Houston area is averaging over 3,300 new COVID-19 cases a day, Fox News reported.
Among the 50 states, Texas ranked 19 with the biggest increase in unemployment claims compared to the week prior to Jan. 14, and has ranked 29 since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, posting a 710.30 percent increase in unemployment claims compared to the same period the previous year according to Wallet Hub.
