Recent federal legislation will increase emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits in January for Texas recipients.

Approximately $204 million in SNAP food benefits will be provided by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in January as Texas continues its pandemic response, the Governor’s Office reported.

"These emergency SNAP benefits continue to help put food on the table for many Texas families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic," Gov. Greg Abbott said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved the state’s request to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size. Almost $2 billion in benefits were provided to Texans between April and December 2020. The 15% increase in benefits continues until June 2021 and should first be seen in accounts by Jan. 23.

Texans who are in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBenefits.com or use the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage benefits.
