Texas' increased substance use linked to negative affects of the COVID-19 pandemic

Addiction treatment inquiries in Texas have increased 22% since the beginning of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, according to Lockdowners Anonymous, in conjunction with the state’s economy also severely suffering during the pandemic.

In Texas, the percentage of addiction treatment inquiries is higher than the national average, Times Record News reported. But some states have seen even higher increases, such as Iowa with a 61.38% increase since the beginning of the pandemic. Some states, such as Maryland, Virginia and New Mexico, are experiencing an approximate 50% increase.

The inquiries come at a time when substance use is believed to have increased.

Lockdowners Anonymous said that 1 in 5 unemployed U.S. adults have turned to alcohol during the pandemic. There has also been an increase in the number of Americans turning to drug use and overdose.

Many turn to these solutions due to being isolated from friends and families, experts said.

The anxiety and economic instability of the pandemic can lead to a much worse situation for those already suffering from substance abuse. The National Bureau of Economic Research has found a correlation between unemployment rates and increased deaths from opioid overdose.

A survey also showed that 20% of U.S. citizens unemployed during the coronavirus pandemic are also using alcohol to cope with the crisis.

“A significant portion of this year has been difficult for everyone, and very challenging for some people in recovery. Financial woes and housing concerns during a global pandemic are circumstances worrying for anyone. For those living a sober lifestyle, this can be too much to handle and turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms, like substances, becomes a real possibility,” Dr. Lawrence Weinstein, chief medical officer for American Addiction Centers, told the Times Free Press.

Texas’ economy has also been severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with the state seeing its lowest economic levels since 2009, Texas Business Dailyreported.

Shutdowns have led to many businesses temporarily or permanently closing, leading to many Texans being furloughed or laid off.

Many industries, including hospitality, have been hit extremely hard. The Texas Recovery Alliance said it believes officials need to work on reopening to give Texans confidence in the state’s economy. Much of the increased substance use in Texas is linked to a negatively impacted economy.

"In Texas in particular, a challenge has grown that is equal to the safety threat of virus spread. The Texas economy, once the pride of all Texans and an engine for the nation, is suffering worse than in many other states," the Texas Recovery Alliance said in a report. "Broad indicators make clear that, while the economy may be mending, it is still suffering in ways that should be addressed boldly. In addition, entire industries that are critical to the economic well-being of Texas are on their backs, through no fault of their own."
