Texans receiving unemployment benefits will soon need to prove they are searching for employment to continue receiving assistance.
Beginning July 6, unemployment recipients will need to start documenting their job search efforts with records of their searches and any related documents in case the state requests proof of their efforts. This requirement was temporarily suspended as the COVID-19 pandemic caused an economic downturn across the country.
Texans on unemployment are receiving up to $521 every week in benefits, in addition to the $600 weekly from federal stimulus law. The funding from the federal government will end on July 25.
"We're seeing employment opportunities begin to bounce back in Texas as our economy restarts," Texas Workforce Commission Executive Director Ed Serna told Community Impact Newspaper. "There are opportunities out there, and getting Texans back to work and businesses up and running again will create even more."
There are more than 570,000 job openings on the state's job portal.
