According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a bright spot amid the rising unemployment numbers in Texas.
The most recent statistics indicated more than 20.5 million people in the United States lost their jobs in April, with 1.3 million people in Texas applying for unemployment. The good news is that a majority of those experiencing unemployment expect it to be temporary.
KVUE-TV reported 78% of those Texans who filed for unemployment in April believe they will be back at work when the state's stay at home order ends. Most of those unemployed work in restaurants and bars, which have been among the hardest hit industries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Texas Workforce Commission spokesperson Cisco Gomez told KVUE-TV said the state’s oil and gas industry has also been hit as prices have dropped due to the pandemic and international tensions.
The Texas Workforce Commission also indicated areas that have a higher unemployed rate include Central Texas, the Borderplex, the Permian Basin, the Coastal Bend and East Texas.
